Lunugamvehera National Park in Sri Lanka was declared in 1995, with the intention of protecting the catchment area of theLunugamvehera reservoir and wildlife of the area. The national park is an important habitat for water birds and elephants. The catchment area is vital to maintain the water levels of the five tanks in the down stream of Kirindi Oya and wetland characteristics of Bundala National Park. This national park also serves as a corridor for elephants to migrate between Yala National Park and Udawalawe National Park.The national park is situated 261 km (162 miles) southwest from Colombo.
Lunugamvehera is in the Dry zone of Sri Lanka, therefore the park is exposed to annual drought relieved by the south western monsoon. The elevation of the park is 91 metres (299 ft). Out of 23,498 hectares of total land area 14 percent, that is 3283 ha, is land under the reservoir. Another 50 ha are two smaller reservoirs. Nearby Thanamalvila area receives a 1,000 millimetres (39 in) of annual rainfall. Rainfall decreases from North to South and West to East across the national park.
Fauna of the park includes 21 fish species, 12 amphibians, 33 reptiles, 183 birds and 43 mammals. Sri Lankan Elephant, Water buffalo, Sri Lankan Sambar Deer, Wild boar, Sri Lankan Spotted Chevrotain, Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Sri Lankan Axis Deer, and Asian Palm Civet are the some of the common mammals. Bufo atukoralei, and Fejervarya pulla are endemic among amphibians found in the forest.Mugger crocodile is one of the aquatic reptiles. Large water birds such as Grey Heron, Black-headed Ibis, Asian Openbill, Painted Stork, andSpot-billed Pelican are inhabit here.
Yala National Park or Ruhuna National Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka. It is situated in the southeast region of the country, and lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. The park covers 979 square kilometres (378 sq mi) and is located about 300 kilometres from Colombo.
- Yala is one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Sri Lanka. Of 215 bird species of the park, six are endemic to Sri Lanka.
- Including Sri Lankan Elephant, 44 species of mammals are resident in Yala National Park. The elephant herd of Yala contains 300–350 individuals. Toque Macaque, Golden Palm Civet, Red Slender Loris, and Fishing Cat are among the other mammals that can be seen in Yala.
- Being one of the highest leopard densities in the world. 25 individual leopards are estimated to roam in Block I.
- The reptile fauna recorded from the park is 46 and five of them are endemic. Sri Lankan Krait, Boulenger's Keelback, Sri Lankan Flying Snake, Painted-lip Lizard and Wiegmann's Agama are the endemic species.
- The coastal line of the park is visited by the all five globally endangered sea turtles (Leatherback turtle, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Hawksbill turtle, and Green turtle) that visit Sri Lanka.
- The two breeding crocodile species of Sri Lanka, Mugger crocodile and Saltwater Crocodile inhabit the park.
- The Indian Cobra and Russell's viper are among the other reptiles. There are 18 amphibian species that have been recorded from Yala.
